Frequently asked questions

What is the Ethereum Gas Tracker?
A free Tatum tool that shows live Ethereum fee levels (slow, medium, fast) in Gwei, a historical medium-gas chart, and a Wei ↔ Gwei ↔ Ether converter—so you can check network conditions without opening a wallet.
What is gas on Ethereum?
Gas measures the computational work of a transaction or contract call. You pay a fee in ETH equal to gas used × effective gas price. Congested blocks raise prices; quiet periods lower them.
What is Gwei?
Gwei (giga-wei) is the usual unit for gas prices: 1 Gwei = 10⁹ wei = 10⁻⁹ ETH. Wallets and explorers almost always quote fees in Gwei, while settlement still happens in wei.
What do Slow, Medium, and Fast mean?
They are suggested total fee levels for different urgency. Slow is cheaper and may wait longer; Fast pays a higher priority tip for quicker inclusion. Medium is a balanced default for most transfers.
What is the base fee vs the tip?
After EIP-1559, each block has a base fee burned by the protocol, plus an optional priority tip (maxPriorityFeePerGas) paid to the validator. The tracker’s speeds are typically base fee + tip. The base fee line under the cards shows the current network base fee when available.
How is my transaction fee calculated?
Fee (ETH) ≈ gas used × effective gas price (Gwei) ÷ 10⁹. A simple ETH transfer often uses ~21,000 gas; contract calls use more. Multiply by the ETH/USD rate for a rough dollar cost. Exact cost depends on inclusion-time base fee and the tip you set.
How often do live prices update?
The page refreshes live fees about every 30 seconds from Tatum’s fee estimation API. The timestamp and block number under the cards show when the last sample was taken.
Where does the historical chart data come from?
The chart plots historical medium gas price in Gwei over ranges from 24 hours to all available history. Use the range buttons (24H, 7D, 30D, 90D, 1Y, All) and drag to zoom; axes rescale to the selection.
How do I convert Wei, Gwei, and Ether?
Use the converter below the chart. Enter any one unit and the others update. When live medium Gwei is available, the converter can seed from that value so you can turn a quoted gas price into wei or ETH quickly.
Do I need a Tatum API key to use this page?
No. The tracker uses a server-side key with rate limits so you can check fees in the browser. For production apps or higher volume, create a free key in the Tatum Dashboard and call the Fee API yourself.
How do I fetch live gas in my app?
Call Tatum’s fee endpoint, for example GET /v3/blockchain/fee/ETH with your API key. See the fee estimation docs and API reference linked on this page for request shape, other chains, and production usage.
Is this the same as the Gwei calculator?
Related but different. This tracker focuses on live network fees and history. The Gwei calculator is a dedicated unit/fee math helper. Both use the same Wei / Gwei / ETH relationships.
